Comments and Research Notes

The shloka is an excellent semantic match for the kural. A difference is that the kural says that having second thoughts after commencing a task is a disgrace, whereas the Panchatantra verse says that will lead to remorse. In that sense, the kural includes in the disgrace both the potential thought to abort a task as well as remorse after completing the task. Also the kural uses the word for think, whereas the Panchatantra verse uses the word examine, but they carry the same meaning in this case. The Panchatantra verse provides an example by referring to a story summarized here. A Brahmin lady leaves her baby with a pet mongoose. It kills a threatening snake. Seeing blood on the mongoose, she imagines the worst and kills, then regrets discovering the truth.
