Comments and Research Notes

The kural generally and abstractly urges the wisdom of investigating the real truth of whatever is heard from whomsoever’s mouth. In contrast, the whereas the Yogavasishta verse employs many concrete examples to state that words that are supported by reason are to be accepted even if from children and rejected as if it were a blade of grass, even if it is heard from Brahma (the one born on a lotus). They are a reasonably good match on the key message, but there is some semantic gap. Also மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவ could be interpreted as jnana through vicara, which is addressed elsewhere in the Yogavasishta. Vivekacudamanai verse 13 says अर्थस्य निश्चयो दृष्टो विचारेण हितोक्तितः. While not a parallel to the kural, it says that certainty about the real meaning/truth is seen to arise through inquiry (vicāra) upon beneficial teaching. So wisdom is in reasoning and contemplation of what you hear.
